How to Install a Security Screen Door

To help improve the security of your home, you may choose to install security screen doors. Security screen doors are usually made of metal, and are designed to help keep unwanted intruders out of your home. Today, most security screen doors are also designed to be stylish, in order to ensure that they don’t take away from the aesthetic appeal of your home.

Step 1 – Purchase a Security Door
You can usually find good security screen doors at most home improvement centers. If they don’t have a door in the style you’d like, you can ask to see their product listing, in order to have them order a specific style for you. Most home improvement centers will do this for little or no charge. Be sure that your security screen door is made of sturdy material, preferably metal. If it’s going to be exposed to the outdoors, make sure that it is able to withstand excessive moisture, heat, cold and severe weather conditions. Remember, security screen doors are normally a permanent addition, and should be in a style that complements your home. It’s also important to take the width of it into acount, since most come in two specific widths:

  • 36 inches
  • 38 inches

Measure your door beforehand, and be sure that the door that you choose matches this measurement. If you have a different width, you may need to special order it from a home improvement center.

Step 2 – Purchase a Lockset
In order to make your security screen doors effective, you will usually need to also purchase a lockset for your new door. If it isn’t included with it, be sure to purchase a lockset that matches the design and pattern. It’s best if you purchase both a doorknob and a deadbolt-style lock.

Step 3 – Check the Instructions
Before attempting to install your new security screen doors, it’s best if you read through the instructions. They should be fairly easy to follow, and will also outline any special tools that you will need to install it.

Step 4 – Check the Mounting Hardware
Most security screen doors will also include the mounting hardware for it. Check to make sure all of this hardware is included, and has not been damaged.

Step 5 – Customize the Mounting Hardware
There is usually a piece called the “Z Bar” included with the mounting hardware. This piece needs to be cut so that it can fit inside your door frame. This can usually be done with a hacksaw.

Step 6 – Fit the Door
Once the mounting hardware is in place, fit the door to the frame. It should be able to hang evenly, the base of it being at a perfect 90 degree angle from the frame.

Step 7 – Install the Hinges
Using a power drill, attach the hinges through the Z bar, so that they extend into the molding. Be sure to keep even pressure on the drill, and to ensure that all screws go in completely straight. Since having the door at the proper angle is so important, you may want to enlist the help of an assistant to hold it while you are attaching the hinges.

Step 8 – Attach the Header
In most cases, the header piece will need to be placed directly over the door itself. There should be pre-cut holes in the header piece, which will help you to decide where you should place the screws. Be sure that the header piece is attached securely before proceeding.

Step 9 – Install the Expander
On security screen doors, the expander is a metal or plastic piece that is attached to the bottom of the door. This piece acts as a barrier to prevent dirt, leaves and other debris from being caught beneath the door when it opens and closes. There should be a little bit of clearance between the expander piece and the bottom of the door frame.

Step 10 – Finished!
You’re all done! Ensure that your security screen door opens evenly, without rubbing up against specific spots in the frame.
